How to Check a GPA

A GPA or grade point average is an accumulative number that can determine a student's success in graduation or even college admissions. Throughout a semester a student's GPA will change depending on the letter grade she receives in a class. A student can check her GPA by dividing the total grade points by the attempted credit hours to get a range of 0.0 to 4.0.

Request a copy of your current transcript from the school administrator. Remember that some schools will require you to pay a fee for additional transcripts. Check the GPA listed on the transcript and remember that it does not factor in any courses that are currently in progress.

    • 2

Look over your current semester's report card for the letter grade listed. Find the column that indicates the number of credit hours for each courser.

    • 3

Use the calculator to total up the total number of credit hours attempted and write it down on a piece of paper. Multiply the total hours for the class by the points of the letter grade using four points for an "A", three for a "B", two for a "C" and one point for a "D." For example, if you have an A grade for a three-credit course you will have a total of 12 grade points toward that course. Repeat this step with the remaining courses. Add the total number of grade points for all of the courses.

Divide the number of grade points by the number of attempted course hours. For example, if you have 30 grade points and 10 attempted credit hours, you should end up with a GPA of 3.0.
