Determine the value of quality points at your institution. These are the numbers given to each earned grade. For example, your university may begin its quality point scale with four points for an A, three points for a B and so on. Make note of all of these on a sheet of paper.
Determine the number of semester hours for each course that you have taken. Look at your transcript and find this under course information. At the end of the course title, it will state semester hours. These are typically between one and four credit hours. Make note of this.
Calculate your grade points earned for each class that you have taken. Do this by multiplying the course credit hours by the quality points you earned for the grade received. For example, if you earned an A in a three credit hour course, the equation would be 3 x 4 = 12 grade points earned. Do this calculation for each class you have taken.
Determine the total number of grade points you have earned. Add the grade points from all of your classes, which you determined in Step 3. For example, if you have taken six classes over three semesters and have figured your grade-point total for each class, you would add them in an equation like this: 12 + 9 + 12 + 6 + 12 + 9 = 60, which is the total grade points earned.
Divide the total points earned by the total number of credit hours you have completed. For example, if each of the six classes was valued at three credit hours, you will have completed 18 (6 x 3) credit hours. Divide 60 by 18 to find your cumulative grade point average, which would be 3.33.
