How to Figure Out My Total Weighted Grade

One of the benefits of taking Advanced Placement and honors courses in high school can be a "weighted" grade. In some schools, a "B" in an Advanced Placement class counts the same as an "A" in a non-AP class. The "B" had added "weight" and adds more to your overall grade-point average, or GPA. Calculating and knowing your weighted GPA can help you more accurately visualize how you are performing across your entire course load.

Instructions

    • 1

List all of the courses in which you are currently enrolled. Next to each course, write down your current grade. Ask your teachers to tell you your grade if you do not know.

    • 2

Assign each grade a number. This is the amount of grade points the grade is worth. An "A" grade equals 4. A "B" is 3. A "C" is 2, and a "D" is 1. An "F" grade does not earn any grade points. In AP courses, add 1 to the grade's number. An "A" in an AP English class, for example, would be worth 5 grade points. Some high schools add 0.5 grade points for honors classes, and only college-level courses, such as AP classes, get one whole extra grade point. Confer with your school's counselor to confirm which system is used by your school.

    • 3

Add up all of your grade points together.

    • 4

Divide the total sum of all grade points by the number of classes you are taking. Even if you have an "F" in a class and do not earn grade points, make sure you include it in the number you are using to divide. The final resulting number is your total overall weighted GPA.
