How to Figure Out Your Semester GPA

There are two grade point averages (GPAs) relevant to academic standing. A cumulative GPA is an average of all your grades and is the average that most universities, professional schools and employers will ask about. A semester GPA is based on the current semester. By knowing and maintaining a good semester GPA, you are guaranteeing that your cumulative GPA will be high. A college will look at a student's high school GPA to determine acceptance. Once in college, only college courses are considered in determining your GPA. It is relatively easy to figure out your semester GPA.

Instructions

  1. Numerical Equivalent

    • 1

Write down each class and grade on a sheet of paper.

    • 2

      Determine the numerical equivalent for each of your grades and list it on the paper. The numerical equivalent is as follows: A-plus equals 4.3, A equals 4.0, A-minus equals 3.7, B-plus equals 3.3, B equals 3.0, B-minus equals 2.7, C-plus equals 2.3, C equals 2.0, C-minus equals 1.7, D-plus equals 1.3, D equals 1.0, D-minus equals 0.7, and a F and U receive no points.

    • 3

Add up the numerical equivalents for each grade you received and divide the total by the number of courses you took. This is your GPA.

    Quality Points

    • 4

List the class, grade and semester hours credited for each course taken during the semester on a sheet of paper.

    • 5

Find out the number of quality points you have earned for each course, multiply the number of semester hours for each course by the numerical equivalent of the grade received. List the quality points on the paper.

    • 6

Add up the total number of quality points received for the semester and divide by the number of semester hours that are relevant to calculate your GPA. Include semester hours for classes that you received a U or F. Do not include semester hours for the classes you received an S or P in.
