How to Determine Your GPA Scale

Your grade point average, or GPA, is a critical measuring stick that shows just how well you're doing in school. The GPA is typically on a scale from zero to four, with four being the highest and zero representing failing grades. If it's weighted, it can be higher. If you have a list of letter grades, you can quickly and easily convert them to grade points and then determine your GPA on the four-point scale.

Instructions

    • 1

Add all the points from the final grades you got together. An "A" is worth 4.0, a "B" is worth 3.0, a "C" is worth 2.0, a "D" is worth 1.0 and an "F" or a "U" is worth 0. Add 0.3 if there is a "+" next to the letter, and subtract 0.3 if there is a "-" next to the letter. For example, if you took five classes and got an "A," an "A-," a "B-" and two "C"s, the total points would be 14.4. If you have a weighted GPA points for honors or advanced classes, add a point to the "A," "B" and "C" grades -- which are worth 5.0, 4.0 and 3.0 points, respectively -- and add them to your grand total.

    • 2

Divide the total points by the number of classes you took. In the example, 14.4 divided by 5 is an average point score of 2.88.

    • 3

Determine where you stand on the GPA scale by converting that point total to the nearest letter. In the example, since 2.88 is closer to 3.0 than it is to 2.7, your GPA would convert to a "B."
