How to Determine Unweighted GPA

Many colleges consider your high school grade point average (GPA), along with standardized test scores, when evaluating you as a candidate for admission. Some high schools assign extra weight to certain advanced courses, but a weighted GPA is generally used for internal purposes, such as class ranking. Colleges tend to focus on the raw GPA, called the unweighted GPA, which does not assign extra point value to particular coursework.

Eliminate any courses that were taken using an alternative grading method. Courses taken as pass/fail or credit/no credit fall under this alternative grading method, and should not be considered in figuring your unweighted GPA.

    • 2

Note that an A is worth 4.0 points, a B is worth 3.0 points, a C is worth 2.0 points, a D is worth 1.0 point and an F is worth 0 points.

    • 3

Multiply the number of credit-hours attempted times the number of grade points earned for each course you attempted throughout your college career.

    • 4

Divide the total number of grade points earned by the total number of credit-hours attempted to arrive at your unweighted GPA.
