How to Calculate QP

Colleges and high schools measure academic performance in terms of grade point averages (GPA), which shows the average quality points (QP) an individual earned in any given class. Universities, professional schools and many employers use an applicant's GPA as a predictor of how well the applicant would perform if selected. Understanding how to calculate QP allows you to monitor your GPA and set concrete goals to achieve the GPA that you want.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine the number of credits each class is worth. Look at the course catalog if you do not remember a particular course's credit value. For example, semester-long class that meets for three hours a week is typically worth three credits.

    • 2

Find your grade for each course. Consult the academic handbook to determine how your school awards quality points for partial grades, such as an AB or B-. Record the letter grade next to each course. For example, most schools assign four quality points to an A and three quality points to a B, while an A- receives 3.7 quality points.

    • 3

Multiply the number of credits the course is worth by the number of quality points assigned to the letter grade you earned in the class. For example, a letter grade of A in a 3 credit class equals 12 QP. Add together the total QP for all classes.
