How to Calculate DGPA

Diploma Grade Point Average (DGPA) is a ratio of the total grade points earned divided by the total credit hours completed. Graduate schools request DGPA upon application. A DGPA of 4.0 is excellent, whereas a DGPA of 2.0 is average; a DGPA under 2.0 is considered inadequate by graduate institutions. Colleges typically offer a key that explains how many grade points they assign to each letter grade. Some schools, for example, may not allot different points for a "plus" or "minus" grade.

Schools may convert letter grades to grade points using different methods.

Obtain the letter-grade to grade-point conversion chart from your school. Typically, an A is worth 4.0 points, B is worth 3.0; C is worth 2.0; D is worth 1.0 and F is not worth any points. Courses that are incomplete or dropped are not counted. Plus grades are generally worth the grade beneath them plus 0.33 points, e.g., B+ is worth 3.33 points and C+ is worth 2.33 points. Minus grades are worth the grade below them plus 0.67 points, e.g., C- is worth 1.67 and D- is worth 0.67.

Convert each letter grade into a grade point. For your first semester, an A, C+, B- and B would be worth 4.0, 2.33, 2.67 and 3.0, respectively.

    • 3

Multiply each grade point by the credit hours earned for that course. For example, the A was earned for a three credit-hour class and is worth 12 grade points; the C+ is only worth 2.33 because it was a one credit-hour course; the B- course was a three credit-hour course worth 8.01 credit points; and the B was earned in a three credit-hour course for a total of 9 points.

    • 4

Add the total points earned -- 31.34 using the example. Divide the total points earned by the credits earned during the semester, e.g., 31.34 / 10. Your GPA for the semester is 3.134.

Calculate DGPA following Step 2 through Step 4 for every course which directly applies to your degree program.
