Write numbers on a set of index cards with a marker. Write numbers you want to instill an understanding of in children. For example, if you want to teach the numbers 1 through 20, print the numbers 1 through 20 on index cards. If you are working on lower numbers, 1 through 5, for example, write each of the digits two times on individual index cards; two number 1s, two number 2s and so forth. There should be an even number of cards.
Shuffle the cards. Deal the cards to two players. Each player should have an even amount of cards. Instruct players to place their cards in a face-down pile in front of them.
Instruct each player to flip over one card from their pile at a time. Inform players that the person whose card displays the higher number keeps both cards. For instance, if a 3 and a 5 are displayed on the cards, the player who flipped over the 5 should keep both cards.
Have children continue flipping over their cards, assess the numbers. The person who reveals the higher numbered card keeps both cards for each round. If two of the same numbers are revealed, each child keeps their own card and flips over a new one.
Instruct children to count the total number of cards they have collected after all cards have been flipped over. Inform players that the person with the most cards wins the game.
