How to Create Footnotes on a Page

Footnotes can be used for citations in history, anthropology and many other academic reports. They can also provide extra information on a topic when there is limited space to discuss it within the main body of the written work. Footnotes sit directly at the bottom of the page in which the information is discussed, unlike an end note, which comes at the very end of a written paper. Footnotes can be inserted using a word processor, which will automatically number and organize the footnotes you create in your work.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the cursor at the end of the sentence for which you would like to create a footnote. The footnote number denoting citations or extra text should always be placed at the end of the sentence in which the information is discussed.

    • 2

Click on the "References" tab at the top of the page and click on "Insert Footnote." The page should automatically create a small number at the end of the sentence to be cited and a matching number at the bottom of the page where your information will be typed. In Open Office, click on the "Insert" tab at the top of the page. Scroll down and click on "Footnote/Endnote." Click on the "OK" button and the footnote will be created at the bottom of the page, with the matching number at the end of the sentence.

Place the cursor next to the number at the bottom of the page and type out the citation or factual information you want to include. Footnotes are generally written in 10 point font.
