How to Make Paper Windmills for Kids

Making a paper windmill with your kids is an interactive way to make the most of a blustery day. The kids will love blowing on the windmill or taking it outside and letting the wind twirl the colorful paper. Children can also learn a valuable lesson about wind energy while creating their windmill. Much larger metal versions of their paper windmill create energy that is distributed to homes and businesses in the form of electricity.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure two equal-sized squares of construction paper. Choose different colors of construction paper or use one color.

    • 2

Draw a diagonal line across each square. Cut on the line about two-thirds of the way toward the center of the square, without cutting through the center.

    • 3

Place one square over the other. Fold each cut tab of the construction paper square toward the center.

    • 4

Secure the ends folded into the center with a straight pin. Place a bead through the other end of the pin on the back of the windmill.

    • 5

Push the end of the pin through a pencil eraser. The children can hold the pencil and watch their windmill spin.
