Friendship Games for Elementary School Girls

Friendship between elementary girls is a relationship that is uniquely special and memorable. At this point in their development, girls are ready to have a group of close friends. They spend their time together talking about life, school and even boys. As a teacher or parent, facilitate and encourage young girls to get to know each other better and therefore build new friendships or improve upon existing ones. The use of games encourages this process in a fun and non-threating manner.
  1. Friendship Interview Show

    • Create a interview show setting and place two chairs facing one another. Assign one girl to be the interviewer and present her with a fake microphone. Allow her to ask the other a series of questions, and then change roles. For young girls, give them the questions ahead of time such as, "What is your favorite store in the mall?" For older elementary children, allow them to create their own questions during the interview show. If you have a large group of girls, simply pair them off randomly for the game.

    Baby Photo Game

    • Ask each girl to bring a picture of herself as a baby or a very young child to the meeting. Collect these photographs prior to the activity and place them in random order. Gather the girls together and hold up one photograph at a time. Ask the group to guess who the girl in the photo is and then ask her to come up and tell everyone a little bit about herself. She might tell the group a story about the photograph or simply her likes and dislikes, depending on how well the group already knows each other prior to the activity.

    Scrapbook Page

    • Ask each girl in the group to create a scrapbook page about herself prior to the game. Encourage her to use a variety of craft materials such as photographs, magazine pictures and stickers that represent her personality. She should not write her name on the scrapbook page. Bring the girls together and turn all the pages upside-down and scatter them on a table. Allow a group member to choose one and try to guess who made the page. Have her describe, based only on what it is represented on the scrapbook page, that particular girl.

    Teddy Bear Toss

    • Bring a teddy bear to the group gathering. Gather the girls together in a circle and throw the teddy bear to one group member. Ask her to state something interesting about herself, such as her favorite vacation spot or subject in school. Then she should throw the teddy bear to another member of the group so that girl can share. If the girls have difficulty coming up with what to share, ask prompting questions, such as, "What is your favorite color?"
