Cite online documents with the same information you would use in an offline document citation. This includes documents accessed via the Google Books service, e-books, and other online documents that feature a specific author and publication information. These kinds of documents are often in PDF format.
Locate the publication information. For Google Books documents, click on the "About this book" link, located to the left of the document text. This will direct you to a page featuring the full publication information. For other online documents, check for a cover page or footnote, as these portions are generally used to list the publication details.
List the full publication information for the document according to your required citation style. This includes the author or authors, document title, journal title (if applicable), publisher information and publication date. To indicate that the document was accessed online, include the word "Web" without quotes, followed by a period. Also include the date that you accessed the website.
Locate the publication information of the website you are referencing. Generally this is located in a copyright section at the bottom of the page. Alternatively, check the website's homepage or information section to access the webpage's publication details.
Include the author of the page. If no author is listed, begin your citation with the title of the website. Then list the title of the webpage and date of the most recent page update. List the publisher details, such as the organization which owns the website.
Include the word "Web" without quotes and followed by a period for MLA citation. Follow this with the date on which you accessed the webpage. For APA citations, you instead write out the website address and access date in this format: "Retrieved September 15, 2011 from http://www.nameofwebsite.com."
