How to Create a Free Work Cited Page

Writing a works cited page, or bibliography, can be a challenging task for a large paper with many sources. Each type of publication---book, encyclopedia, website---has a specific format that must be followed. If you have all of the information necessary for your works cited page but are unsure how to format it, there are a few websites that offer free bibliography formatting.

Instructions

    • 1

Keep track of all necessary information from works that you reference as you do your research. Write down the title and name of the publication (or URL for web references), the author, page numbers, publisher, editors and the city (if applicable). As you write these, consider what information one would need to find your reference. For example, if you reference a play, write down the act, scene and line numbers.

    • 2

Find a website that offers free works cited composition, such as EasyBib or Seton Hill University's BibBuilder. BibBuilder automatically formats in MLA style, while EasyBib allows you to choose from MLA, APA and other styles.

    • 3

Choose the style you want for your bibliography, if applicable. Enter the title, author or keywords to search for your book.

    • 4

Enter the information you wrote down in step 1 in the appropriate fields. If applicable, choose the type of publication; for example, if the reference is from a book, you may be able to specify if it is a novel or short story collection.

    • 5

Click "Create" when all of the information is entered. Your correctly formatted citation will appear either in a new window or at the bottom of the page. Highlight the entire selection, and click control and "C" to copy. Then paste the citation into your Word document.

    • 6

Add the information for each reference on the list you created in step 1. Arrange the entries in your Word document in alphabetical order based on the last names of the authors. Each entry should be single spaced with a double space between entries.
