The Defense Acquisition University provides training and continuing education in topics such as acquisition management, contracting, facilities engineering and program management. Its overall mission is to create a learning environment that empowers acquisition specialists to successfully maintain supplies in a combat situation. Some specific courses designed to meet this objective include, Acquisition Law, Orientation to Federal Procurement Regulations, Briefing Contracts and Fraud Awareness.
The Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center provides advanced instruction in 24 different languages as well as many local dialects. Each course lasts between 26 and 64 weeks, five days per week, seven hours per day. These courses are available to active and reserve military personnel, as well as civilians in government occupations. In addition to classroom training, the Institute has created an 80-hour DVD language program called "Headstart." It provides basic culture, language, reading and writing lessons. As of February 2011, the program\m is offered for Iraqi Arabic and the Afghan dialects of Dari and Pashto.
National Defense University is a graduate-level university. It typically awards more than 550 master's degrees annually, according to the university. The underlying colleges of this university include the College Of International Security Affairs, Industrial College of the Armed Forces, Information Resources Management College, Joint Forces Staff College and the National War College. Several of these colleges have agreements with non-military institutions for transfer of credit hours.
The Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences focuses on educational courses related to tropical diseases, disaster medicine, adaption to extreme environments and medical readiness. The goal of the program is to provide health professionals with the knowledge needed to serve the Department of Defense, as well as the United States Public Health Service.
