How to Site an Electronic Document Using the APA Style

With the rise of electronic documents, reference guides have developed procedures for citing these sources that are similar to those used when citing print material. The American Psychological Association (APA), has a specific way for citing electronic documents that uses the traditional article citation format, but has an additional element for electronic information.

      Write the author's last name, followed by their first and, if applicable, second initials, followed by a period.

      For example: Smith, J. A.

      Insert the date of publication in parentheses, followed by a period, after the author's initials.

      For example: Smith, J.A. (1999).

      Write the full name of the article in sentence case followed by a period, after the date.

      For example: Smith, J.A. (1999). Common American animals.

      Write out the e-journal or website name followed by a comma, and then followed by the issue number, volume information in parentheses, page numbers -- if applicable -- and finish with a period after inserting the article's title.

      For example: Smith, J.A. (1999). Common American animals. Journal of Zoology, 111(1).

      Write "Retrieved from," followed by the full URL from which the information was obtained, followed by a period.
