How to Cite the NAFTA Agreement

When writing a paper, article or other document, it is important to give credit to those whose work you have cited. Not only does citing sources give you credibility for research, but also protects you from lawsuits or course failure due to plagiarism. Some documents are difficult to cite and give credit for, either because they are part of a group of documents or because they have many authors under an organization. The North American Free Trade Area (NAFTA) documents fall into both categories and must be cited as government documents.

Instructions

    • 1

Cite in MLA format for research papers, unless otherwise specified. Cite the name of the government organization, followed by the underlined title of the document followed by a period, the document number followed by a period, place of publication followed by a colon, name of publisher followed by a comma and date of publication. For example:

NAFTA. Title of Document. Document number. Location: Publisher, Year.

    • 2

Cite in APA format for many journals and medical papers. Cite the name of the organization followed by a period, then give the date in parenthesis followed by a period. Insert the document title in italics, followed by document number in parenthesis and a period. Insert the place of publication, colon, and name of publisher. For example:

NAFTA. (Year). Title of Document. (Document number). Location: Publisher.

    • 3

Cite using the Chicago Manual of Style, if requested. Cite the name of the organization followed by a comma and the document title in italics. In parenthesis, insert the place of publication, a colon and the name of publisher followed by a comma and the year of publication. After the parenthesis, insert a comma followed by the page or range of pages cited. For example:

NAFTA, Document Title (Location: Publisher, Year), Page Number.
