How to Cite the Federal Acquisition Regulation in APA Format

Citing government documents such as the Federal Acquisition Regulation (FAR) document present a unique challenge in a research paper because they sometimes do not have the standard data available for citation. However, with attention to detail, you can include all the necessary elements for a proper and complete citation of a government document. The FAR document is available in print form or online.

Instructions

    • 1

Type the initials for the government departments responsible for issuing the FAR document, separated by commas, in the order they appear on the document. Place the ampersand sign before the final organization for the first in-text citation. Treat the organizations as authors. Because all of these organizations are familiar to most people, you can use initials instead of using the whole name of the organization.

First in-text citation example 1: The Federal Acquisition Regulation document is issued by the General Services Administration, Department of Defense and National Aeronautics and Space Administration (GSA, DOD, & NASA, 2005).

First in-text citation example 2: FAR is issued by the GSA, DOD, and NASA (2005).

Type the department initials of the first organization listed on the document followed by et al. Type a comma, then the year the document was issued followed by another comma if including a page for additional in-text citations. The format for a page is p, period and page number or numbers (p. 9 or p. 9-20).

Second in-text citation example 1: "This edition includes the consolidation of all Federal Acquisition Circulars through 2001-27" (GSA et al, 2005).

Second in-text citation example 2: According to the GSA et al, "This edition includes the consolidation of all Federal Acquisition Circulars" (2005).

Type the organization names separated by commas and an ampersand before the last organization for the reference page citation. Type the publication year, then the title of the work followed by publication data. The first word of the title of the work is capitalized and the first word after a colon. The title of the publication is capitalized and italicized. Include the volume or publication number. If the information was retrieved from a website, include the website from where the information was retrieved. Sort references alphabetically by author or organization name. Format each reference with a hanging indentation (first line to the margin, additional lines indented one-half inch).

Reference page example: General Services Administration (GSA), Department of Defense (DOD), & National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). (2005, March). Administrative matters: Contract execution. Federal Acquisition Regulations, I, 4.1-1. Retrieved July 22, 2011, from https://www.acquisition.gov/far/current/pdf/FAR.pdf
