How to Read an Accuplacer Test

Accuplacer tests are used to assess a student's academic level in specific subject areas such as math and English. Often these tests are given at community colleges or technical schools, where students who are attending may need to take remedial classes in specific subject areas before completing their required course. While taking the actual Accuplacer test may be difficult, it's relatively easy to understand and read an Accuplacer test.

Instructions

    • 1

Take the test through a school. Only schools that have a license to use the software can give Accuplacer tests. They are not available to be taken online, which means you need to schedule a time to take the test with the college or technical school you attend.

    • 2

Review your basic information. At the top of the printout of your score sheet for the Accuplacer test, your basic information will be listed. This includes your name, birthday and in some cases social security number. Since this score record becomes part of your academic file, make sure that this information is correct.

    • 3

Examine your scores. Underneath your basic information, the actual subject tests you took will be listed. To the right of the names of the tests will be a score. You will be placed into the appropriate class based on this score. This is why it's important that you have spoken to an advisor beforehand to learn what scores correlate to specific classes.

    • 4

Compare scores to class placement. Most schools have a three-tiered score placement for Accuplacer tests. This means that you can end up in a basic, intermediate or college-level (required) class. Often the basic and intermediate levels are remedial courses which won't count towards your degree. However, they will help prepare you to be successful once you get into the college-level class.

Review your test percentages. Listed to the right of the score will also be your test percentages. While your school will not use these to place you in a class, they can give you some understanding as to how you rank compared to your peers. You may find that even though you ended up in a remedial course, most of your peers did as well.
