The New Zealand Psychological Society (NZPS) is the country's leading association for psychologists and psychotherapists. This institution focuses on providing licensed psychologists and enrolled grad students with additional training in areas of psychotherapy, including marriage and family therapy, couples therapy, military issues, trauma and post-traumatic stress disorder. NZPS generally offers these courses during its annual conference. Admission depends on the teacher, as well as the student's background information. Some scholarships may be available. Please visit the NZPS website for more information.

The University of Canterbury's psychology department offers both a two-year diploma in clinical psychology and a three-year PhD program in clinical psychology. The diploma program, similar to a master's degree in the United States, is open to both natives and international students. The training is very broad and general rather than specific, aiming to blend academic research with clinical field training.
The PhD is similar to the diploma program but more extensive. Students take courses in such areas as assessment, field training, psychological theory and biological bases of behavior. Completion of the program requires a thesis and field work training. Students have the option of interning their last semester in the area. Admission is open to those with a BA degree, although a MA degree is strongly preferred.

The University of Otago, New Zealand's first university, also has a stellar graduate clinical psychology department complete with field training, research, clinical exams, oral exams and thesis. Otago is unique in that the student must have a master's degree for admission into the PhD program. With a master's degree (from Otago or elsewhere), completion to the PhD takes approximately one to two years. At Otago, students study with some of the best clinical psychologists in the country, attend conferences with the New Zealand Psychological Society, conduct groundbreaking psychology research and publish academic papers. This rigorous and challenging program makes an ideal choice for the clinician with extensive, diverse previous experience.

The University of Auckland's clinical psychology program is exclusive in that only New Zealand and Australian citizens/residents may apply. A BA degree is required for admission, while an MA degree is strongly preferred. Similar to neighboring institutions Otago and Canterbury, the University of Auckland requires coursework, clinical field work, research and a thesis. Students take courses designed specifically for doctoral study, including Portfolio of Clinical Research Part I and II and Scientist-Practitioner Model Part I and II. This research-emphasized program allows students to design their own course schedules and research projects. Auckland's clinical psychology school makes an ideal option for self-starters who have an idea of their short- and long-term goals.
