The British Columbia Arts Council provides funding for registered professional arts orgranizations as well as registered non-profit organzations. Such groups may be artistic in nature or non-artistic but work on a project with an artist. To qualify to receive a grant the project proposed needs to cost at least $500, involve an original idea, involve the community, share skills and information with the artistic community, among other criteria. Additionally, after receiving the grant you must advertise the fact that the Council providing grant money on promotional materials for your event. For non-profits which provide healthcare services, there is a government grant which can help fund research. The grant is called CIHR (Canadian Institutes of Health Research) grant. To be eligible, the Nominated Principal applicant needs to be affiliated with the non-profit, which may include a charity or community organization. If awarded, the grant money goes to the institution. A Nominated Principal is one who is responsible for the proposed project, who will deal with the grant money once awarded and who will maintain contact with the CIHR. Additionally, the Nominated Principal needs to be an independent researcher, supervisor, trainee, or knowledge user. Only the Nominated Principal Applicant can submit an application for the grant. Moreover, the Principal needs to register with the CIHR to get funding, among other stipulations. For non-profits which are in buildings, there are ecoEnergy grants which allow environmentally-friendly building projects. The grant money is given in one of 3 ways. Either is it $10 for each gigajoule of energy saved, 25% of the project cost or $50,000 per project, or $250,000 per organization. After the project as been completed and verified the money is awarded. There are restrictions on the types of buildings which can get the upgrades. They need to be no more than 20,000 square meters, up to 10 buildings can be in one project, a pre-project audit needs to be done, along with other requirements. Examples of eligible projects include improvements to the ventilation, ligthting, heating and other items.
