Legitimate Grants for Women

Whether you're looking to start or continue your education, better your community or open your own business, you've probably heard of grants that are awarded to women who are looking to pursue a college degree or business opportunity. While there are some grant offers that shouldn't be trusted, several legitimate grant opportunities for women are offered by the federal government and certain states.
  1. American Association of University Women

    • The American Association of University Women (AAUW) is in Washington, D.C., and awards grant and scholarship money to women with bachelor's degrees who are looking to pursue higher education and advance their careers. Women who are members of the AAUW, as well as women of color, are especially considered for this grant, as are women who are preparing to obtain their first higher-level college degree. The funds from the grant cover expenses such as tuition, books, college administration fees, and child care. The AAUW funds several types of grants to meet the needs of professional women, such as the Career Development Grant, which is designed for women who will be re-entering the work force after obtaining their graduate degree; and the Community Action Grant, which provides professional women with the research funds necessary for education and equality for women and girls.

    Altrusa International Foundation

    • A grant from the Altrusa International Foundation can help women to start or enhance a community service program that promotes human well-being, i.e. a care center for the elderly, or an educational institution for preschoolers. Women who are volunteers at these types of community locations can also receive grant funds to continue their work in a specific neighborhood. Grant amounts range from $250 to $1,000; Altrusa has a number of branches across the country; the headquarters are in Chicago.

    The Avon Foundation

    • Avon is a well-known company that has helped women gain financial independence for years by providing opportunities to sell cosmetics and fragrances. The Avon Foundation issues grants to non-profit organizations for women who are looking to improve their lives educationally, emotionally or professionally by awarding money mainly to breast cancer and domestic-violence survivors. The amount of the grant varies based on need and circumstances. Grants are not awarded to religious or political organizations, and money is not allotted for fund-raising events.
