Educational Grants for Nursing

We all know that there is a critical shortage of nurses. Grants are one way of financing nursing education. They are rewarded to students based on financial need and do not have to be paid back. Many private organizations, state and federal government, and charities all offer financial assistance to students that are pursuing a nursing degree. Each grant will have different requirements but grants are worth the extra time and effort.
  1. Federal Pell Grant

    • Pell grants are rewarded based on financial need. This grant is the foundation of federal grants. Pell grants will vary in the amount of money awarded. The amount of money awarded will be determined by financial need, status of student, (part-time or full time), and the number of years a student plans to attend school. The maximum amount awarded is determined by funding from the federal government so it can vary from year to year.

    Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant

    • This grant is awarded to undergraduate students who have exceptional need. These grants are determined by expected family contributions (EFC). The EFC amounts are taken from the Pell Grant application. Students can receive between $100 and $4,000 a year. The award amounts are determined by financial need, the school you will be attending and the policies of the financial aid office at your chosen school. The students with the lowest EFC are considered first.

    Academic Competitiveness Grant

    • This grant provides $750 for the first year of school and $1,300 for the second year of school. The amount of the grant combined with the Pell Grant cannot exceed the amount due to the school. Some years, the grant amounts awarded could be reduced depending on the number of eligible students and the amount of funding available. The requirements are rigorous for this grant.

    American Association of Nurse Practitioners

    • Nursing students who know that they would like to specialize as nurse practitioners can apply for these grants. These grants are awarded to nurse practitioner students and to nurse practitioners who are already employed. You must be a member of the AANP to apply. The AANP Foundation awarded $549,640 worth of scholarships and grants to its members in 2008.

    Project Grants

    • This grant encourages registered nurses to apply for full-time employment at facilities that are extremely understaffed. The grant will help nurses repay their nursing education loans. The public or nonprofit facilities that qualify for this grant are determined by the Secretary of Health and Human Services. You must agree to work at one of these facilities for at least two years. At the end of the two years, 60 percent of your loan will be forgiven. A third-year commitment will net another 25 percent loan reduction.
