EKG Tech Programs in NYC

EKG technicians are trained to use the equipment that obtains heart readings from a patient. The electrical impulses recorded by an EKG technician are reviewed by doctors in order to diagnose heart conditions. Students who complete EKG technician training in New York City (NYC) are prepared to enter the workforce immediately, as the state of New York does not require EKG technicians to take certification or licensing examinations as a prerequisite to employment.

    • The Manhattan Institute's EKG technician training course covers topics including EKG equipment, anatomy and physiology of the heart, EKG interpretation and medical terminology. Students are trained in how to apply electrodes to a patient for an EKG reading, as well as advanced procedures including stress testing, where a patient's heart rate is monitored while walking on a treadmill, and holter monitoring, which requires a patient to be fitted with a portable EKG monitor in order to measure heart activity during a 24-hour period. The Manhattan Institute's EKG course can be completed in three weeks, and full-time, part-time and weekend options are available. Enrollment can be completed in person, on the phone or via the Internet. Applicants who are not high school graduates take an entrance examination.

    New York Medical Career Training Center

    • The 36-hour EKG course at New York Medical Career Training Center teaches students to obtain an EKG rhythm. Graduates of the course will be able to identify major heart structures and identify various heart rhythms such as sinus, junctional, atrial and ventricular. Students can take courses during the day, in the evening or on weekends. Job placement assistance is available upon completion of the course. Students who do not have a high school diploma or GED must pass an entrance exam prior to enrolling in the EKG course.

    New York Institute of Medical Careers

    • The 50-hour EKG technician program can be completed in as little as five weeks. The program covers topics including cardiovascular anatomy and physiology, heart rhythms, pacemaker functions and performing an EKG. Enrollees need to present a social security card and photo identification, along with a high school diploma or GED. Prospective students who do not have a diploma or GED must pass an entrance exam as a prerequisite to enrollment.
