The New Jersey State Board of Cosmetology stipulates that an applicant must provide evidence that they successfully completed 1,200 hours of instruction from a New Jersey approved school, or a school that is approved in another state or country. Documentation of completion must be provided to the state board prior to the applicant being administered the licensing exam.
The cosmetology and hairstylist licensure applicant must pass the certification exam that is administered by the New Jersey State Board, which requires that you contact the state board and schedule an exam. The exams are administered electronically via a computer, and you may take scrap paper and a pencil to the exam.
