List of Required Materials for the New Jersey State Board of Cosmetology

The New Jersey State Board of Cosmetology and Hairstyling regulates and licenses manicurists, cosmetologists-hairstylists, skin care specialists and teachers of cosmetology and hairstyling. Some licenses in the state of New Jersey may also be granted to applicants as an endorsement through inter-state reciprocity. The New Jersey State Board has a list of requirements that must be met for each application for licensure. Age and work experience are also requirements for state licensure and certification. The New Jersey State Board of Cosmetology licenses cosmetologists dually as hairstylists and does not provide a licensure for cosmetologists only.
  1. Education Requirements

    • To become licensed as a cosmetologist/hairstylist in the state of New Jersey, you must take evidence of a high school diploma or GED to the state board.

    Age Requirements

    • You must provide proof that you are at 17 years or older in order to take the New Jersey State Cosmetology Board exam.

    Adult Learning Education Requirements

    • The New Jersey State Board of Cosmetology stipulates that an applicant must provide evidence that they successfully completed 1,200 hours of instruction from a New Jersey approved school, or a school that is approved in another state or country. Documentation of completion must be provided to the state board prior to the applicant being administered the licensing exam.

    State Exam Requirements

    • The cosmetology and hairstylist licensure applicant must pass the certification exam that is administered by the New Jersey State Board, which requires that you contact the state board and schedule an exam. The exams are administered electronically via a computer, and you may take scrap paper and a pencil to the exam.
