Soldiers and citizens who are employed by the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) may enlist in free online military training through the "Defense Knowledge Online" network system. DKO access is gained through a service member's military service portal. Training programs are generally related to military service such as foreign language training or military occupation specialty training.
Various colleges and universities offer distance education through online courses. With traditional "brick-and-mortar" colleges these courses are generally related to personal and professional development. However, some online programs are available that lead to a degree or credential. College of the American Soldier partners with GoArmyEd and other colleges to provide distance education for American soldiers.
Military personnel may receive tuition assistance (TA) for certain educational programs. These programs must be affiliated with colleges accredited with agencies recognized by the US Department of Education. TA is limited to master's or below degrees.
