Verify your eligibility to take the GED examination. In the state of New Jersey, you must be at least 16 years old and not have graduated or be presently enrolled in high school. If you're 16 or 17 years old, a parent or legal guardian must complete and sign a "Certificate to Consent to Participate" form. Verification of a court's award of guardianship must be submitted with this document for all applicants with legal guardians. Meet residency requirements. All GED test applicants must show two forms of identification, including government-issued identification, such as a valid photo ID and another document that verifies your name and address, such as a utility bill.
Contact a local educational facility and inquire about the availability of GED test preparation classes. (See Resources for site listings.) Most centers administer academic assessments to determine GED readiness skills. If you require additional help, you can enroll in New Jersey adult education and GED classes free of charge. These classes offer coursework and practice GED testing in reading, math, science and social studies.
