How to Get a Cosmetology License in New Jersey

Each state has different requirements to get a cosmetology license and it is best to know what New Jersey mandates before you decide on cosmetology as a career choice in that state. Each year the median wage for a cosmetologist continues to grow and that's not including tips.

Instructions

    • 1

Be at least 17 years old. Young adults start to think about what their career choice is going to be during their high school tour, but if you are a resident of New Jersey, there is an age requirement that has to be met before you can achieve this goal.

    • 2

Show proof of a high school diploma or a G.E.D. The majority of colleges, universities, and educational facilities, require proof of high school education completion or equivalency.

    • 3

Supply proof of 1,200 successfully completed hours of instruction at an approved New Jersey educational institution that specializes in the instruction of cosmetology. If education is completed in another state or outside of the United States, the licensed school must have similar courses to schools in New Jersey.

    • 4

Learn how to shave someone else. Even as a beautician, you must know how to shave because there is a shaving test that will be given. There was a merger between the Board of Cosmetology and Hairstyling in 1984, which caused the state the inability to test barbers and cosmetologists separately.

    • 5

Study for and pass the exam that is administered by the Board of Cosmetology.

    • 6

Request an out-of-state application if you already have a license from a different state. You still need to show proof of required hours of instruction and pass the state board's examination.
