Enroll in and complete an accredited ultrasound degree program. The degree program will depend on the specialty area you are interested in. Expect to complete a minimum of a two-year Allied Health associate's degree. Possible majors include: physical therapist, diagnostic medical sonographer and radiologic technologist.
Complete a clinical internship or practicum, or work full-time as an ultrasound/vascular sonographer. You will need a minimum of 12 months full-time experience. Applicants should have clinical experience that includes a minimum of 800 diagnostic cases.
Apply for certification in the area for which you are eligible through ARDMS. Provide all of the documents required to verify your education and clinical experience. You can complete the application online through ARDMS. Pay applicable fees with your application. If your application is accepted, you will be mailed an Examination Confirmation Letter specifying the exam(s) you are approved to take and the 90-day window you are allotted for scheduling and taking the exam.
Take the ARDMS exam(s) for the certification area you seek. At the end of the exam, you will receive a preliminary score. Upon a final review by ARDMS, a passing score will result in being certified and applicants will receive a temporary ID card and be added to the ARDMS online directory of certified practitioners.
Submit the required documentation, including the ARDMS credential if required by your state, to fulfill state licensing requirements. States vary in their requirements, licensing procedure and licensing fees.
