How Often to Groom & Bathe a Yorkie

The Yorkshire terrier, also known as a Yorkie, is breed of dog with a long, silky coat of blue color. Yorkies are born with a black coat but develop a blue one as they grow into maturity. The average weight of a fully grown Yorkie is 7 pounds. The height of a mature Yorkie is about 7 to 8 inches, although there have been records of much smaller Yorkies in the world such as Sylvia, a Yorkie whose height at her shoulder was 2 1/2 inches in 1945. The Yorkie’s long coat makes it susceptible to flea infestation and, thus, requires proper maintenance to keep it clean and neat.
  1. Preparation

    • Yorkies sometimes are stubborn; therefore, try to win your Yorkie’s confidence before you begin to bathe or groom it. Train your Yorkie to get used to you, an exercise that takes time before the dog permits you even to comb its hair. Begin by giving the dog treats before meals, but it has to earn the treats. Introduce performances such as having the Yorkie sit still on a towel as you pet it or give it a massage. The longer the dog keeps still, the more treats it earns. Continue with the exercise until it develops into a routine. You know your Yorkie is ready to be bathed and groomed when the dog offers less resistance to these rituals.

    Bath

    • Introduce baths to your Yorkie when it is at least 1 month to enable it to get accustomed to water. Yorkies are bathed as often as necessary to keep them clean. The number of times per week or month that you bathe your Yorkie depends on the length of its coat. The longer the coat, the more you need to bathe him to keep it clean. When you begin the process of bathing, ensure that you have all the tools you need, such as a metal comb, towel, shampoo and cotton swabs, to avoid leaving your pet in water as you search for bathing materials. Use your fingers to gently untangle the dog’s hair, then brush and wet the hair. Pour shampoo on the dog's back, then work it down the Yorkie’s body using your fingers. Use a wet cloth for the beard and face. Rinse your pet with a lot of water.

    Drying

    • Dry the coat of your Yorkie with a towel. Alternately, use a dryer for the same purpose. Apply medium heat. If your dog has long hair, use a larger dryer. Move the dryer along the body of your dog to prevent the dog from getting burned. Do not dry the fur completely as the wetness helps to stop your Yorkie’s hair from breaking. Brush the hair to remove any knots. Finish by adding a dog bow. Bows come in various sizes, from 3/8 to 5/8 inch, and may be obtained from your nearest pet-accessory stores.

    Grooming

    • Use cotton swabs to clean your Yorkie’s ears. Dab the swabs into ear cleaning solution and gently clean the dog’s ear. If the Yorkie’s ears have hairs inside, pluck them out gently with your fingers. Where they are too far down in the dog’s ears, use a pair of tweezers. Hold your Yorkie firmly with a towel and proceed to cut his nails with clippers.
