How to Retake the Board for an RN

The National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses is more commonly known as NCLEX-RN, also known as the state boards. They can sometimes require more than one attempt to successfully pass. Failing state boards is a blow to the ego, but they can be taken again as many times as you need to. Unfortunately, that is also a very expensive proposition because the student has to foot the bill for all of the testing fees, and they are not cheap.

Instructions

    • 1

Contact your specific state board of nursing to determine how long you have to wait to retake the test. It will be at least 45 days because you cannot take the test twice within a 45 day period, according to the National Council of State Boards of Nursing Retake Policy. However, it can be as long as 90 days, depending on your state's board requirements.

    • 2

Contact the board and make them aware that you intend to retake the exam. You may need to submit more paperwork, more fees or perform other checks as your board sees fit. Only then will they generate an Authorization to Test (ATT) letter once they deem you eligible.

Register with Pearson VUE, the testing company, and pay the $200 testing fee (as of May 2011) for the retest. This fee is different from any of the fees required by the state board. The fee can be paid at the Pearson VUE website (pearsonvue.com), by phone or by mail.

Schedule an exam date with Pearson VUE at any of their locations around the world. Locations can be found at the Pearson VUE website.
