How to Retake the NCLEX After 20 Years

The National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX) is for licensure of Registered Nurses and Nurse Practitioners. The National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN) developed the test. It is administered by Pearson VUE. You can take the test at one of the official Pearson testing centers across the nation and territories including several international locations. Taking the NCLEX for the first time or retaking the test to renew your license requires being approved to take it by a licensing board and scheduling the exam.

Instructions

    • 1

Get in touch with the Board of Nursing for your state or jurisdiction to request a licensure application. The board will review with you the requirements for licensure and supply you with the application materials. You must meet the eligibility requirements set by your board in order to take the test. Fill out all application materials and return them to the board with the appropriate fee.

    • 2

Obtain a copy of the NCLEX Candidate Bulletin which contains all the information about testing, testing facilities, and the test. You receive a copy by going online or contacting your nursing board.

    • 3

Register with Pearson VUE to take the exam. Contact the Board of Nursing to obtain a paper copy of the registration to fill out and mail to Pearson VUE with the $200 registration fee, call the VUE NCLEX Candidate Services and pay the fee by phone, or go online to the Pearson VUE website for registration.

    • 4

Study for the test. The National Council of State Boards of Nursing does not endorse any specific course or study options but recommends reviewing the NCLEX Test Plans which are a comprehensive analysis of the test.

    • 5

Schedule and take your test upon receipt of the Approval To Test. You will receive an ATT by mail once the Board of Nursing approves you for testing and Pearson VUE acknowledges your registration.
