The NCLEX is an exam that allows prospective nurses to obtain a nursing license in the state they intend to practice nursing after receiving a passing score. The test results are recognized in all 50 U.S. states. If a student receives a passing score, she can then obtain licensure to practice in a state. Passing the NCLEX allows nurses to receiving reciprocity in another state by paying the required licensure fees of that particular state.
The NCLEX exam is available for prospective registered nurses (RN) and licensed practiced nurses (LPN) who have met the requirements to sit for the test. Prospective registered nurses take the NCLEX-RN, which they have six hours to complete. Prospective licensed practice nurses also take the NCLEX-RN, which must be completed in five hours.
According to the National Council of State Boards of Nursing, success is when the "passing candidates answer 50% of more difficult items correctly, and failing candidates answer 50% of easier items correctly." The difficulty level of questions is determined by how the test taker examined the prior questions. If answered correctly, the questions become more difficult. If answered incorrectly, the questions become easier. However, at least 50 percent of difficult questions must be answered correctly to pass the test. The NCLEX offers a variety of questions on the test, which include multiple choice, multiple response, and fill-in-the-blanks. To receive any credit, a student must answer all questions correctly. The test is over once the computer can make a determination that the test taker has either passed or failed after completing a certain bank of questions. The minimum number in the bank is 75, and the maximum is 256.
Registering for the NCLEX exam involves several steps. First, an application for licensure must be submitted to the board of nursing where a nurses wishes to be licensed. Prospective test takes can register for the NCLEX via phone, mail, or on the Internet.
NCLEX costs $200 per exam, as of 2010. Credit card, certified check, money order, or a cashier's check is accepted. Credit cards cannot be used when registering by mail.
