GED Courses in Utah

The Utah General Education Development exam covers five subjects: social studies, language arts, reading, science and math. With the exception of the language arts writing portion, the test consist of multiple choice questions. Since the state only allows you three opportunities to take the GED exam, you should take some courses to prepare for it.
  1. GED on TV

    • Utah offers free GED preparation courses to residents of Utah on KUEN and KUED television stations, enabling citizen to study from the convenience of their own home. In order for these video series to help you, you need to have completed at least the ninth grade. The state also recommends acquiring the TV program's companion workbooks. Workbooks follow the progress of the television programs and offer assignments to help you learn. Most public libraries allow you to borrow the workbooks or use them while in the library, or you can purchase your own copy by contacting Kentucky Educational Television. You can also find taped recordings of "GED on TV" at most libraries. Since the program runs in cycles, you can start your course anytime. If you miss the first subject, start with the second subject then catch up on the first subject when the program starts over again.

    Horizonte Instruction and Training Center

    • Part of the Salt Lake City School District, the Horizonte Instruction and Training Center offers GED courses at their Adult High School. The school offers both daytime and night courses for your convenience. Day courses run Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 2:55 p.m. As of 2010, the day program costs $35. Night classes operate Tuesday through Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. and cost $20. All students must also attend a two day orientation prior to taking classes. Programs operate in six to eight week sessions.

    Dale Young Community Schools

    • Dale Young Community School's Adult Education program helps students ages 16 and up prepare for the GED. This school offers two different course locations. The classes at Dale Young Community School in Brigham City run Monday through Friday fro 8 a.m. to 12 p.m., or Monday through Thursday from 6 to 9 p.m. Classes at Bear River High School Media Center in Garland operate Tuesday through Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. To attend any of these courses you must pay a $25 registration fee as of 2010 and any applicable book fees. These courses are only open to Utah residents so you must show proof of residency such as a Utah driver's license or Utah identification card.
