How to Sign up for a GED Program

A General Educational Development (GED) certificate can go a long way toward reviving a career cut short by lack of a high school diploma. The GED certificate is considered an equivalent of a high school diploma and many jobs require an applicant to have at least one or the other. It also can be a stepping stone to college. The GED test is comprised of five sections -- writing, reading, math, science and social studies -- and each section consists of about 50 to 80 questions. While studying for the GED test can be a daunting task, there are several preparatory resources available.

Check with your local community college admissions office. Many community colleges offer GED training courses to the public. Often these classes are free of charge, and available in the evening to accommodate working adults.

Contact your local state and/or county Department of Workforce Services (DWS) office. Your local Workforce Services office will have resources for GED preparation and courses, and often partner with organizations that offer these courses free of charge. They may also have contact with organizations that provide one-on-one GED subject tutors.

Search for online correspondence GED preparation courses. There are hundreds of online GED preparatory courses available. While these types of courses are easy to find, not all online GED preparation classes are free or reputable. You can check out most any online school through the Better Business Bureau.
