Verify GED program enrollment eligibility. You must be at least 16 years old to enter a GED program. If you're 18 years old or older, you must be an Alabama resident and not presently enrolled in a diploma program. If you have earned a high school diploma, regardless of your age, you're ineligible to obtain a GED.
Contact your former school, if you're 16 or 17 years old to obtain a school withdrawal verification statement from a school administrator. You must also provide a notarized letter signed by your parent or guardian granting you permission to enter a GED program in Alabama.
Enroll in an Adult Education program. GED exam preparation classes are offered free of charge at various locations throughout the state. Check the Alabama Community College System's website for a list of participating educational facilities. You can also purchase or borrow GED test study guides and practice booklets from a bookstore or local library to review and practice questions before the exam.
Register for the GED exam. Contact a GED test center to complete the registration process. As of April 2011, you will be required to complete an application, present a valid government-issued photo ID, social security card and pay $50, if this is your first time taking the exam. Presenting a photo ID card from the Alabama Community College System is also acceptable.
Arrive at your assigned testing site promptly and bring a valid photo ID. Take and pass the exam to receive your GED.
