HVAC Nate Certification Study Guide

The North American Technical Excellence organization provides certification for HVAC technicians, installers and senior technicians. NATE is the U.S. heating, ventilation, air-conditioning and refrigeration industries not-for-profit certification organization.
  1. Certification

    • There is no single NATE certification to be studied for and obtained; a HVAC professional can choose between 22 different tests to obtain certification within a specialized HVAC subject. These subjects include air conditioning installation and service, air distribution installation and service, and air-to-air heat pump installation and service.

    CORE

    • To become certified as a NATE HVAC installer, mechanic or senior technician, a candidate must pass the CORE test and one specialty exam. The CORE skills test covers subjects such as areas of safety, HVAC tools, heat transfer system and electrical systems.

    Recertification

    • All NATE certifications are valid for five years, with recertification available upon the completion of 60 hours of continuing education within the five-year period. Senior technicians certified by NATE must complete the CORE test and two specialty subject exams.
