The A+ Certification is administered by CompTIA, and tests for a basic entry-level knowledge of IT. CompTIA has a number of other certifications which are available to certify upper-level knowledge of specific subjects in computer repair. The CompTIA A+ exam tests your knowledge of computer use, troubleshooting and repair, and it tests how well you apply the knowledge. As a result, the A+ is used as the industry standard for testing whether an IT professional is well-trained in basic computer repair knowledge. You can use your CompTIA certification as proof you are qualified to apply for an entry-level IT job.
The A+ certification guide tests whether you are prepared to function in an entry-level IT position. CompTIA offers training classes which can help you gain the knowledge you need to pass the test. You can also study by finding a test preparation guide to the CompTIA exam at your local library. The test is given in two parts. The first part, CompTIA A+ Essentials, checks your knowledge of computer functions, as well as software and hardware identification, repair and troubleshooting. You will be extensively tested on Windows and Mac operating systems, and you will be expected to have a basic working knowledge of Unix and Linux releases in order to pass the first part of the exam.
The second part of the exam, CompTIA A+ Practical Application, tests your practical application of the knowledge you have gained. You will need to know how to use the operating systems mentioned above, and you will need to know how to correctly and safely install the basic hardware in a PC, such as RAM, hard drives or motherboards.
Tests for the CompTIA A+ exam are given by independent testing companies which CompTIA has chosen to administer the tests.
