ESCO & EPA Certification

The ESCO Institute is certified by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to provide training and certification programs for Section 608 and 609 air conditioning programs. The institute is in Mount Prospect, Illinois.
  1. Types

    • The EPA Section 608 Stationary Air Conditioning & Refrigeration certification program is available in three types, along with a mandatory core exam. Section 608 certification is available for maintenance and repair work completed on small appliances, high-pressure appliances and low-pressure appliances. Section 609 is required for technicians working or dismantling air conditioning systems in an automobile.

    • The ESCO Institute's Section 608 certification courses are designed to ensure the candidate has knowledge of the Clean Air Act. All applicants must pass the core exam to complete the certification program. Subjects covered under the certification include leak detection, equipment requirements, and shipping and transporting.

    Section 609

    • Section 609 certification is required for technicians who come into contact with the air conditioning unit of a motor vehicle. Subjects include leak repair and topping off air conditioning systems. To pass the 609 certification, a candidate must reach a passing grade of 84 percent on the 50-question exam.
