An administrator will need a bachelor of science in health science, a certification in assisted living management or an associate of science degree in assisted living. These can be obtained through local colleges, universities, trade schools or Internet course study.
Specific course study titles for an ALF administrator varies throughout the country, however the basics remain the same. Core training includes: fire safety and emergency planning, ALF administration, managing medications, personal care and basic nutritional requirements of the residents. Courses enable the ALF administrator to recognize those residents with special needs such as Alzheimer's disease, mental health issues or those that require hospice services. Core training classes are available throughout the country and consist of 12 to 80 hours classroom training.
In addition to the basics, ALF administrators need training in various regulatory activities applicable to their state. An ALF administrator requires knowledge of state-specific rules, laws, regulations and guidelines. Budget, insurance and management courses are an advantage to a well-rounded education. ALF administrators must pass an exam and complete additional training every 12 months to maintain their certification.
