Based in San Diego, the Institute for Shamanic Wisdom is run by Dr. Liana Carbón, a Cuban-born shaman, ordained minister of the International Association of Spiritual Humanists and Earth Stewards, and one of the original members of the Society of Shamanic Practitioners. The Institute offers one-, two- and three-day workshops on subjects such as Andean mysticism, offerings to the spirits and Shamanic Reiki. Many of these workshops are held on ancient Anasazi sites in Arizona.
Path Home offers a number of certification programs which are registered with the State of Colorado Division of Private Occupational Schools. These two-year programs include certification as a Shamanic Practitioner, Drum Circle Steward and Shamanic Arts Teacher. Classes are offered on-site in Berthoud, Colo. usually on one weekend a month. The school is headed by Gwilda Wiyaka, a shamanic practitioner who has studied in the Arapaho, Choctaw, Seneca, Sioux and Navajo traditions.
The International School of Shamanism is based in Atlanta, Ga. and was founded by Tom Lake, a practicing shaman who focuses on unconditional love and acceptance as the key to emotional and physical health. The school offers a two-year program for Mesa Carrier, or healer, which features altered states of consciousness, rituals and energy work. It also offers a number of workshops on topics such as shamanism as a spiritual practice, past life regression and rites of passage.
A somewhat broader approach is taken by the Esoteric School of Shamanism and Magic, which combines instruction on traditional healing with courses on divination, tarot, magic spells and psychic powers. The school's website offers a free mini course on How to Study Magic, as well as home study course on Basic Shamanism on CD. There are also eight-week tele-courses and occasional workshops and seminars. The school was founded by Alan Joel and Stephanie Yeh, two researchers of the arcane and mystical phenomena.
