How to Make a Dorm Room Bed Skirt

A bed skirt on a dorm room bed is a multifunctional piece. Students in dorm rooms have precious little space, so bed skirts can hide under-bed storage. They also add color to drab walls in dorms where paint, nails and thumbtacks are sometimes considered contraband. Making a bed skirt gives students the freedom to use exciting patterns and colors to customize the look of their space. After all, dorm rooms are used for much more than sleeping. The place for socializing and studying should be as attractive as it is functional.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the mattress to determine how much fabric to use. If using a flat sheet instead of fabric, simply use the appropriate size sheet. Many dorm room beds are extra-long twin size, approximately 39 inches by 80 inches. If cutting custom fabric, add double the height of the box spring to the dimensions. For instance, if the box spring is 8 inches tall, the fabric should be cut to 55 inches by 96 inches.

    • 2

Hem the edges of the fabric with a sewing machine or hem tape.

    • 3

Remove the overlay mattress, and lay the sheet or fabric over the box spring. Place the overlay mattress on top of the bed skirt.
