How to Make a Dorm Room a Comfortable Space

You may feel uncomfortable in college if you’re in a new town or with people you don’t know. That’s why it’s important to make your dorm room, where you’ll spend time studying and relaxing, into a comfortable place. That can be challenging, though. Dorm rooms are small, you often have little say in the furniture and you typically share your room with roommates. However, there are little things you can do to make your dorm room an inviting place to be after a long day of studying and classes.

Instructions

    • 1

Bring only what’s necessary, but bring some fun items, too. Dorms don’t have a lot of room, so don’t bring everything you can think of. You can always swap stuff, such as clothes, out during visits back home. However, bring some things that help make you comfortable, such as books, photos from home and other mementos.

    • 2

Get a rug or carpet. Your dorm room’s floor may be tile or concrete, giving you a cold floor to live on. Improve that by adding a rug or carpet, making it more comfortable for bare feet. A colorful rug or carpet also livens up a dull floor.

    • 3

Use folding chairs or camp chairs for sitting. Dorm rooms don’t have a lot of floor space. Folding chairs and camp chairs, such as the chairs you use for camping and tailgating, can be stowed away when they’re not needed, freeing up space.

    • 4

Add posters, photos and other items to the walls. Dull, white walls can make your dorm room seem like a prison cell after awhile. Liven up the walls with posters and photos of your friends and family.

    • 5

Bring a mattress pad and comfortable bedding. Your dorm room bed may be stiff and uncomfortable. Add a mattress pad or diced foam to make it more comfortable, as well as bringing nice sheets, pillows and a comforter.

    • 6

Add lighting, such as a floor or desk lamp. These help brighten up your dorm room, making it more comfortable to spend time there.

    • 7

Keep your room clean. Even though you’re not at mom and dad’s house anymore, it’s a good idea to keep your room clean. It makes things less cluttered, and thus, more comfortable.

    • 8

Use air fresheners. Keep a relaxing scent going in your room, making it more enjoyable to be there. Be careful, though, with candles, as your dorm may not allow them. Never leave a lit candle unattended.
