How to Calculate How a GPA Will Affect Your Cumulative GPA

If you have a general estimate of what your grade point average will be for the current semester and you know your current cumulative grade point average, you can calculate what effect the estimated GPA will have on your cumulative GPA. This is useful if you want to know what your GPA will be after the semester, so if you have a good semester, you can determine how much higher your GPA will go.

Instructions

    • 1

Find your total quality points and cumulative GPA. If you do not know your total quality points, you can multiply your GPA by your total credit hours taken to find your total quality hours. For example, assume you have a 3.4 GPA with 50 credit hours taken. Your total quality points is 170.

    • 2

Find your expected GPA for the semester and your credit hours taken. Then, calculate your quality points for the semester. In the example, assume you took 16 credits and expect to get a 3.8. Your total quality points equals 3.8 times 16, which is 60.8.

    • 3

Add your cumulative quality points to your estimated quality points for the semester. Add your total earned credit hours to your credit hours for the semester. In the example, 170 plus 60.8 equals 230.8 quality points. Then, 50 plus 16 equals 66 credit hours.

    • 4

Divide your total quality points by your total credit hours to calculate your expected GPA. In the example, 230.8 divided by 66 credit hours equals 3.5, an increase from 3.4.
