College grants are awarded to low-income students by organizations, schools, federal and state governments. Depending on the type of grant sought, students may also need to meet other requirements such as certain academic standards.
College grant applicants must be U.S. citizens or qualified non-U.S. citizens such as permanent residents. Grant providers also require college grant applicants to submit a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form.
Students who are qualified to receive Pell Grants are also eligible for other types of grants, including the National Science and Mathematics Access to Retain Talent Grant and the Academic Competitiveness Grant.
Most college grants are only available to applicants who are enrolled in undergraduate degree programs as part-time students.
Students from low-income families may not be the only ones who can qualify to receive college grants. Some grants are given to students who are minorities, maintain high grade point averages or are pursuing certain types of careers.
