Grants for Women to Go to Film School

A number of women's advocacy groups, private organizations and educational institutions offer grants to deserving women filmmakers who want to continue their film studies. Most of these scholarships and funds are offered in collaboration with film schools around the country and accept applications every year. Some grants are available via individual applications, while others are available through accredited colleges and universities.
  1. New York Women in Film and Television Scholarship Fund

    • The New York Women in Film and Television (NYWIFT), a non-profit membership organization for women working in film, television and other media, offers the NYWIFT Scholarship Fund to provide financial assistance to selected second-year female graduate film students at Columbia University, New York University and the City College of New York. The students must be nominated by faculty members of their respective film schools. As an educational forum and network for media professionals, NYWIFT brings together additional funding and other projects that champion women's rights and achievements in the entertainment industry.

    Women in Film Foundation Scholarship

    • The Women in Film Los Angeles' Women in Film Foundation Scholarship provides women of all ages and backgrounds the opportunity to pursue their film education and establish careers in film, television, communications and new media. This program is open to female graduate students enrolled in any of the major film schools in the Los Angeles area and other parts of the U.S. The applications must be done through the accredited schools, and nominations must be done by the faculty members. Scholars are chosen based on academic merit, artistic achievement and financial need.

      There are many scholarships under the umbrella of the program, which are separately offered in participating film schools including the: Eleanor Perry Writing Award; Meredith Mac Rae Memorial Scholarship; Women In Film/Loreen Arbus Endowment; WIF Crystals Scholarships Verna Fields Memorial Fellowship; Women In Film/Tichi Wilkerson Kassel Endowment; and Bruce Paltrow Endowment.

    Women in Film and Television-Florida Scholarship

    • The Women in Film and Television-Florida (WIFT-FL) is an organization that provides scholarships to encourage members to pursue careers in film and media and help them excel in their academic and production endeavors. WIFT-FL offers financial scholarships to outstanding film and media students to aid their film productions. Eligible candidates must be: members of WIFT; in good standing for at least six months prior to applying for the scholarship; enrolled as a full-time student in a two- or four-year undergraduate or graduate program with major in film, media or any related field; and attending an accredited college or university in Florida.
