How to Do an APA Format Term Paper With Footnotes, a Title Page and a Bibliography

APA stands for American Psychological Association, and APA formatting is commonly used in the social sciences to cite sources. In research papers and other documents relating to social sciences, the APA style dictates specific formatting practices to create uniform documents. Some of the elements of a term paper that follow APA formatting include bibliographies, title pages and footnotes.

Instructions

  1. Main Document

    • 1

Open a new document in your chosen word processor program. Set the document type to standard size, 8.5 inches by 11 inches with 1-inch margins.

    • 2

Write your term paper in Times New Roman sized 10 or 12 point.

    • 3

Select all the text in your term paper. Change the paragraph settings to double spacing. There should be a full space between each line of your paper.

    • 4

Insert the page numbers for your paper in the header of your document, flush right.

    • 5

Insert the title of your paper in the header of your document, flush left.

    Title Page

    • 6

Create a new page at the beginning of your document.

    • 7

Add a header to your title page. The header will read "Running head:" followed by the title of your term paper.

    • 8

Type your title again in the upper half of your title page. Center the title on the page. Term paper titles should be 12 or fewer words, according to APA guidelines. Double space your title if it takes up more than one line.

    • 9

Skip a line and then type your first name, middle initial and last name. Do not add any other titles or degrees.

    • 10

Skip another line and then type your institutional affiliation. This should be the university or other location where your research was conducted.

    Footnotes

    • 11

Reference the footnote in your text by inserting a number in superscript following the punctuation mark. You can follow nearly any punctuation mark with a superscript number, except for dashes and parenthesis. With parenthesis, insert the superscript number inside rather than outside.

    • 12

Place the footnote at the bottom of the same page where the reference appears. Precede the footnote with the same superscript number.

    • 13

Double space the footnotes in the same manner as the rest of the term paper.

    Bibliography

    • 14

Create a new page at the end of your term paper document.

    • 15

Type the word "References" at the top of the page and center justify it.

    • 16

Left-justify each bibliography reference and use double spacing throughout this page of the document.

    • 17

Cite each reference used in your term paper according to APA guidelines. Invert author names, listing last name first, followed by the first name. List all authors for each work, up to a maximum of seven authors per reference. List references in alphabetical order by last name of the author.

    • 18

Title each reference properly according to type. Capitalize every major word in a journal title. Capitalize only the first word in a title of any other non-journal reference, including articles, books and web pages. Italicize longer titles such as journals and books rather than using underlines or quotes. Do not italicize titles for shorter works.
