Cosmetology Performance Criteria

After 1,000 to 2,000 hours of cosmetology schooling, students must take a final exam to obtain their cosmetology license. This exam consists of a written test and a practical or performance test.
  1. Types

    • A cosmetology exam tests candidates on a number of procedures. Testing measures the student's proficiency with disinfection and sanitation, station setup, client protection, client draping, salon procedures and cleanup.

    Significance

    • The setup, disinfection and cleanup processes are just as important, if not more important, than the actual salon procedures. Candidates must master these procedures and their state's rules and regulations before taking the exam.

    Considerations

    • Cosmetology students should have an understanding of fashion, art and design. They should also have a nice personal appearance and a clean work area. Interpersonal skills, image and attitude are also essential to the industry.
