How to Study for the Cosmetology Theory Exam

The National-Interstate Council of State Boards of Cosmetology comprises members of licensing boards from each of the 50 states and territories. The NIC administers the national test, which includes both a written theory exam and a practical exam, in 36 states and the District of Columbia. Before beginning a career in cosmetology, students must pass a written theory exam to qualify for licensure. Even students with excellent practical ability in cosmetology should study to avoid costly retaking fees for the written exam.
