Tennessee Automatic Transmission Schools

An automatic transmission automatically manipulates an automobile's gear ratios so a driver doesn't have to manually shift each individual gear. Late model automatic transmissions are complex and if you want to learn how to work on them, you must take an automotive technology course. You can take these courses at trade schools and colleges, and there are several to choose from in Tennessee.
  1. Chattanooga State Community College

    • Chattanooga State Community College has a 1,290 hour automotive technology program in which students learn about vehicle systems including manual and automatic transmissions. Students learn how to diagnose and repair car problems and graduates are prepared for different jobs in the automotive field, including service manager, technician and foreman. Graduates receive a technical diploma.

    TTC

    • The Tennessee Technology Center at Murfreesboro offers an automotive technology program that requires work in both machine shop and classroom settings. In the shop, students work on actual vehicles to garner real-world experience. Students also learn how to use the tools of the trade and how to read technical manuals. The program provides students with the knowledge needed to pass an automotive certification exam. This is a 432 hour program that results in either a diploma or a certificate.

    NADC

    • Nashville Auto-Diesel College is part of the Lincoln Group of Schools. It's automotive program trains students to become entry-level automotive technicians. Students learn about both manual and automatic transmissions and how to work on these systems. They gain experience in a shop environment, in which they also work on electrical, emission and fuel systems, and diagnose and repair automotive problems. Students pursue either an associates degree or certificate.

    Memphis

    • The Tennessee Technology Center at Memphis offers an Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certified automotive technology program. This is a combination classroom and shop program focusing on automotive theory and the repair of different components and systems, including transmissions. Students also learn how to deal with clients and the skills that you need to pass the ASE Certification Exam.
